The Process

The past two days have been taken up by prepping for a hair make over segment for the Dr. Oz show. Here are a few photos I took of the experience. (Full set here.) I'm not sure yet when it will air, but have heard as early as next week.

The haircut, by Rodney Cutler, while it was briefly still brown on Tuesday morning.

Before it was the lovely shade of blonde that it is now, it was bleached to meth-head yellow. This process took almost two hours. (This may be the most unflattering photo ever taken of me.)
Step one: bleaching. Or how to look like a meth addict.

You Better Work.

You better work.

I had so much fun at the Dr. Oz show today. They run a great show and the staff is amazing.

I will have lots of photos to post soon, but this one is my favorite, taken in a random mirror backstage.

And my outfit, of course. It's a dress I've had in my closet for over a year. I decided to show it a good time. I'm channeling Joan from Mad Men.

On Being Fashionably Late

I am punctual. I am almost never late for appointments and meetings, and when I am I get anxious, as if I have failed. The watch on my wrist is roughly the size of a dinner plate. To be punctual means that you respect someone and their time, and to be late, the way I see it, means you just don't care. I mention this because it's a strange female trait to think that being late is in some way endearing and cute, which it is not.

Social situations are different. This morning I came across this post on Annie Dean about being fashionably late for certain situations, such as for parties and dinners. It's good advice, because no one wants to be the first to arrive or the last to leave.

Blonde Ambition

New hair do. I guess I am blonde now.

On Wednesday I am taping an episode of the Dr. Oz show about hair makeovers. Today I got this genius cut and color from the Rodney Cutler Salon on 57th and Fifth Avenue. Run to go see him and his amazing colorists. (If you get Dallas, you have won the lottery.)

More to come about the show, etc.

Fashion Internsips Aren't That Bad

I had to take down the video of the fashion internships because it automatically started when someone landed on the page, which was annoying, not to mention a strange and slightly outdated feature for an embedded video.

You can watch it here.

True story: The summer after my junior year in college I interned at Elle magazine. I was there two days a week and I worked under an Associate Editor and a few other people. It was a great experience and had I not gotten the job at the Associated Press when I landed in New York City, I likely would have finagled a way to get back there.
Since The Devil Wears Prada came out, I have been fascinated by how fashion internships are portrayed. Maybe I was naive, but I never felt as if I was treated poorly. In fact, I inadvertently charmed the editor of Mirabella magazine, who was on the same floor as Elle, when I mentioned that I loved a smaller, teen magazine project that she did called Tell. (My magazine nerdiness is showing, I know.)

The point is that while the above video is funny, it's not really indicative of what these internships are like. After all, fashion mags and websites are trying to put out a product every day, so treating staff poorly is bad for productivity.

Shiny, Happy Heels

Weddings, like any industry, have trends that come and go. Last year bright shoes under the wedding gown were big. But it's a new year and I'm liking the idea of metallic heels a lot better. Over at SheFinds we found nine styles that work both on and off the aisle.

Gray Is The New Black...For Bridesmaids

Photo of Milford Sound in New Zealand!

You can get a bridesmaid dress in pretty much any color you want, but your girls are never going to wear that perfect, salmon hued dress again. Since fashion karma is a boomerang, it's important to think twice before wronging someone into dropping upwards of $200 on something they legitimately will never wear again.

Over at SheFinds, we love gray dresses for bridesmaids, since the color looks good on everyone and can easily be repurposed for another event. We found nine new bridesmaid dresses in gray that are anything but boring.

Sick Day

Source: tumblr.com via Rhea on Pinterest

Yesterday afternoon I suddenly felt weak and sniffly and I realized I had been hit with the FrankenFlu that's been all over the news. I rarely get sick, so when I get my annual bout of flu I try to manage it as best as I can.

Since I almost always lived alone, and for quite a long time in a basement apartment, I developed ways to take care of myself when there wasn't going to be anyone around. (And alone is the best way to be ill.) The flu is mostly an annoyance, so the sooner you can get it under control the better.

1. Take a shower: Even if you're dizzy and woozy, this is key. Obviously you'll be cleaner, which means less physically germy. The steam will clear out your chest and sinuses a little. I'm always surprised by people who don't bathe when they're sick. It seems counterintuitive.

2. Wash your bedding: Do this as soon as possible since it's probably full of germs. You will also feel better if you're curled up in clean sheets.

3. Stay away from milk and bananas: They'll just create more congestion.

4. Find some really good television to watch: You probably won't have the attention span to read, so a season or two of Breaking Bad should get you through the day. The flu is one of those sicknesses that just needs a day or so of rest, so you might as well make it productive.

5. Push fluids: I like lemonade when I'm sick.

6. DayQuil. DayQuil. And More DayQuil: Especially when you have to face the world again. It'll dehydrate you, but that's better than being the drippy gal at the office.

I'm Running The New York Half Marathon And Raising Money For The MS Society

Raising Money For Multiple Sclerosis

Last year I ran the New York Half Marathon (that's 13.2 miles) and raised money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

I'm doing it again this year and hoping to improve on last year's time of two hour and sixteen minutes. This year it's on Saint Patrick's Day, so please bring your green beer out to the West Side Highway to cheer me on and/or heckle.

Please help me reach my fundraising goal by making a donation. (Please?)

Erin C. On TV! Talkin' Oscars...

When she's not lurking around Gotham with me, Erin C. is an entertainment journalist. And she knows The Oscars.

So much video today.

Odd Internet Meme: Gangsta Moms

Over the past few weeks I've found four random videos in which suburban moms rap about their hard knock life cleaning up spills and changing diapers. (Not to mention losing their figure, which is actually a completely reversible phenomenon.) Motherhood is a life-changing event, sure. Maybe I'm missing something since it hasn't turned me hard core.

Easy On The Snark

Over the Christmas break I edited some graduate school essays for a friend. They wanted a real, honest edit since the next few years of their life depended on these writing samples.

I delivered. Maybe too much so. I've always shot from the hip, but I went a little heavy handed on the snark. For my friend, who is just entering the loony world of writing, the biting humor of media veterans is akin to being hit in the face with a frying pan. It comes out of nowhere and hurts like the dickens.

I started feeling guilty and told them as much. Who could blame me for my knee jerk reaction to writing that needed a little work? Snark has been a major trend in media for the past 10 years. It's the voice that put Gawker on the map and spawned countless imitators. There is an entire generation of writers coming up in the game who have known no other popular form of writing.

This ran on xoJane.com this morning. It's a thoughtful piece about where snark and unnecessary meanness comes from. The takeaway, at least for me, is to consider how much better of a writer one can be if you remove the crutch of sarcasm.

From the essay: "Snark is, in this sense, the ridicule of something that we find, in even the smallest degree, threatening...There comes a point where it's just recreational meanness. The trick is identifying the place where that happens."

Latest Huffington Post Piece: A Reaction To Elizabeth Wurtzel

Source: google.com via Kylie on Pinterest

The New York magazine piece by Elizabeth Wurtzel really struck a chord with me, so much so that I wrote a reaction piece about it for The Huffington Post.

Wedding Dresses To Swoon Over

Since the gallery of engagement rings was such a hit, I made an even larger one of weddings dresses, new for 2013. Overlay is big, as are colored dresses and my personal favorite, anything with gold. Let the day dreaming begin now.

Elizabeth Wurzel's Cautionary Tale

Elizabeth Wurtzel's piece in this week's New York magazine should be mandatory reading for every woman in their 20s. (And 30s, if they still have Hello Kitty gear lying around their apartment. And so many do...)

Wurtzel, who was a media darling in the 1990s for writing about her assorted mental disfunctions and pharmaceutical adventures, admits that at age 45 she has no savings, no partner and basically no stability in her life. (She was kicked out of a West Village sublet and now lives in a strange duplex in Chelsea.)

It's one thing to be a "feminist", but it's another thing to be an overgrown teenager.

Where Are You Now?

I'm on a huge Janet Jackson kick lately and, naturally, thanks to Spotify I can revisit all my early 90s favorites without tracking down down my storage bins full of CDs.

Ms. Jackson obviously has tons of hits, but my favorite song of hers is one from 1993 that never got a lot of fanfare. It was on her album Janet and it's called "Where Are You Now." I remember I heard the song over the speakers in a record store on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley, and I couldn't walk out of the store without it. I don't know when else that has ever happened, and I used to work in a record store for several years. So I know from great albums.

In college it was playing in the background of my room and my roommate, Cara, also become obsessed. I'm not sure if it's the melody, the bass line or -- dare I say? -- the lyrics that make this song amazing. Maybe Cara and I just suckers for sap.

Fine. Let's have some Rhythm Nation, too.

It's A Building Week

This week has been a planning one: planning posts for next week, setting up meetings for the month and getting back into the gym. Don't worry, there will be plenty of beefy updates next week. Hope everyone is up on their New Year's resolutions.

True story: Yesterday I accidentally left my favorite pair of shorts and sweatpants at the Crunch on East 34th Street. I went back today and not only were they in the lost and found, but one of the staff members washed them and wrapped them up in a plastic bag.

When self-help gurus talk about performing random acts of kindness, I think they mean things like this. I was tickled pink not only to have my clothes back, but that someone took the time to make sure they were clean. Pay it forward, kids.

First Kiss

The holidays are all fine and good but it's great to be back to business. Wedding business.

Over the break I found this photo on Pinterest and I think it's genius. Instead of taking the first kiss photo from the guest's perspective, take it from the officiant's and all your guests are in the photo as well.
